Segel told Goldstein that they should at least bring it to Ford first, thinking he would immediately reject it, but at least others would hear that Harrison Ford was involved in the project, which could pique the interest of other major actors. Eventually, Goldstein spoke to Ford and sold him the role. Goldstein still doesn’t understand what he did to convince him, but he was excited nonetheless. He has the weird, idiotic, confident energy that the role requires. And Jessica is perfect. His humor is just right for the dialogue. It’s a new way to understand the situation. There are no real beats, just endearing personalities with a touch of weirdness, and family circumstances that are just a little bit beyond the norm, but still relatable. Of course, Jimmy’s therapist behavior is completely absurd. He immediately loses his license. It’s just impossible. But we allow metaphorical situations in the drama. And in this script, we feel a strong sense of purpose in the decisions. We have to give the writers the upper hand and try to get to the point. It’s easy and entertaining for me. Other reviewers have obviously struggled.
